It's time for another shitty review!
waiting in linei actually had fun waiting in line. we arrived at the venue at three and the only others waiting were two canadian girls and an american girl who introduced herself with the words: "i'm hardcore dave and i have a dave-tattoo and i paid $400 for my ticket". i love being annoyed at first sight. anyway...we sat on the steps outside the venue, freezing our butts off but it was all worth it. this other dutch fan bought bitterballen (bitter balls) for the lot of us, which i think the americans only mildly enjoyed, but they were good sports and thanked him and made 'yumm' sounds.
i was actually the very first to get in the door - that never happened to me before and it was kinda cool that it happened at this concert, which i arrogantly had started to call "MY show". we had a little trouble getting the four of us in (sarah, bobbo, sarah's friend amanda and me) because although we had baptised amanda "shayna cramer-dunn" for the occasion, the lady at the door insisted on seeing her ID. thankfully, her co-worker told her to let us in after checking my credit card number.
once inside, we rushed to the stage to get the best spots but the stage was so insanely high that even *i* had trouble looking over the edge. i could already feel a neck spasm coming, so instead we opted for the first row balcony, at the beginning of the stage. the view was no less than absolutely phenomenal. way better than if we would stand in front of the stage. and i'll admit that i preferred to sit. okay, i'm old. there.
Bartendersame opener as in paris. now, for you guys - who go to 1 billion shows every summer - repetition in the setlist would probably suck. for me, it is great to hear songs twice in a row, because the second time around, you hear other things, for example small riffs i didn't notice the first time.So yeah, bartender. Great song in that church setting.
Stay or LeaveI'll tell you what day it is. It is the day you finally made my dream come true. Thank you thank you thank you.
Save MeDave says: "Goedenavond en welkom allemaal, dit is mijn goede vriend Tim Reynolds." "Ik weet dat er veel Amerikanen in Amsterdam zijn.... maar dit is belachelijk."
which means:"Good evening everyone and welcome, this is my good friend Tim Reynolds."A little later:"I know there are a lot of Americans in Amsterdam ... but this is ridiculous."
Now, everyone keep their pants on - he said it jokingly and it was just a funny remark for the Dutch audience. No hatin'.
So Damn Lucky"I'm dizzy from all this spinning" is not a reference to weed you $#^#&'s
Carrying on...
Old Dirt HillAgain - this accoustic version is really worthy.
Lie in Our GravesThe crowd loved this one. Especially the Tim solo.
Smooth RiderI finally got what everyone means when they're talking about Dave's 'spastic' legs. Fun to watch. The song? Not my favorite, but again - better version than on the album. And it was obvious that Dave really dug playing this song.
CrushI put my fingers in my ears right before 'feeling high' - but there were only a few cheers! Yay Amsterdam crowd! Go team!
Grey StreetOh - if you've read my report on Gorge 2002, you know I used to want to marry these lyrics. Glad I got to listen to it live again.
The MakerSTOP TALKING AMONGST YOURSELVES WHEN THEY'RE PLAYING THE MAKER!!! Who orders beer on the top of their lungs during this one? Barbaric.
Little ThingNo no no - And another thing - Yes yes yes
Jimi ThingIncluding WWBOM! Isn't just wonderful to be in almost-your-hometown and Dave and Tim are maybe a meter below you and you can just suck it all in? Isn't it just downright f-in' wonderful?? To realize that this is one of those nights that will stay with you the rest of your life? And the realization that THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!!??
Tim Solo UnknownI think he took a puff of Dave's joint. That's okay though. The man's a genius under all circumstances.Dave sat on the ground behind Monk's table and watched in awe. After Tim was done, Tim got on his knees and bowed to the audience. Dave got on his knees and bowed to Tim. Tim bowed to Dave. We were all bowing to each other. It's Japan. Only with hookers, bitterballen and tulips.
GravediggerNow you should never have to watch
Your only children lowered in the ground
Chills.
Grace Is Gone"This is a song about Love, Sex and Death. Maybe more about Love and Death and just a liiiiittle bit about Sex".
OhOh, I think this one kinda went by me or it did just not stuck with me. Sorry.
#41 + 1 refrain of EverydayYeah. My song at my concert. And yes, I got gaga. And yes, I could keep myself from yelling "Thank you!!". But it was a struggle.
Crash into MeThe Dixie Chickens must taste good. I always liked the accords sequence of this song, in the Tim version. Nice to hear.
Dancing NanciesNot lost in Amsterdam. But then again, he used to live here for nine months. Dave mentioned thinking that Amsterdam is a great town with a great perspective on things. How that makes it a beautiful city.
This is - honest to god - the FIRST musician that I've seen play at Paradiso that doesn't go on and on about how they can get weed here legally and how that's so awesome bla bla bla bla bla. Very refreshing.
-------------------
Some DevilThe break lasted about 5 seconds. Dave had said earlier that they needed to keep a fast pace because the Paradiso disco was about to start. Tim then turned his guitar into a beatbox and Dave added some acid sounds (acid as in: the musical genre). Maybe it was one of those you had to be there moments, but I thought it was pretty funny.
Still Water (tease)--->
Don't Drink the WaterIncluding the This is your land bit. I love Don't drink the water and Tim was happy too, judging from the sounds he produced. The crowd definitely enjoyed it as well.
SisterSo I heard this one for the second time and this time I f-ing tear up. This song is so beautiful and so delicate. Dave asks everyone to be quiet before he starts playing it. After a collective "Shhhh", you could hear a pin drop.
Two StepI'm bummed. Will this be the last song of the last time they are here? Will this be the last time I see them play, period?
But Sarah had an awesome surprise for me which cheered me up. A numbered poster, no. 41 and the setlist with the guitar pick taped to it. The three of them will end up in a frame on my wall. I'm not a D&T virgin anymore and I can't wait for the band to get here in May!!
