on a completely unrelated note

yannick is growing so fast, he's gotten too big for his crib already. so today, we installed his new bed, which he fits in about four times. he's not amused. no, he's really upset. my heart breaks!

the delivery story

WARNING: not for the easily offended and/or nauseated people. i'm going to be graphic as hell.

so i was exactly two weeks late and they were going to induce. when i got to the hospital, this really nice nurse, brenda, welcomed us with the words: welcome, sweet people. i loved her instantly, because i needed to feel at home. i was kinda nervous. as i had never done this before. and it was a pretty big deal.

the gynaecologist, bart, was also a nice guy, who stopped being nice when he told me they would first put a gel on my cervix to try and see if this would help getting some more dillation. he said it could take 4 hours before he would check up on me again and then they would put more gel on it, wait another 4 hours and THEN they would MAYBE put me on the drip to with the inducement (?) stuff.

so he put the gel on there (maarten thought it was totally weird seeing another guy touching me in that area - which brings me to the sidenote: do they really put that sheet over your lower half in america? or is that just in the movies?) and i had to lay flat for an hour and then i could get up and walk around. we called my mom, thinking it would take another four hours for anything to happen. "come have some coffee and we'll chat for a bit". so i'm lying there for an hour and i get some pain in my back but i'm thinking it's nothing serious. after an hour i got up and started to walk around the hospital with my mom. we got downstairs and went outside to get some fresh air.

SHIT. HIT. THE. VAN.

i started to get contractions. and nothing of this painful episodes of maybe one minute and then pauses for about four minutes. no, it felt like someone stuck a spoon in my tummy and was stirring my guts, while at the same time someone else was breaking my back in two. without pause. CONTINUOUSLY. it's what they call 'contraction storms' in the nl, but i have no idea what the word in english is.

i couldn't breathe. i was going 'pff, pff, pff, pffffff', but you can only do that for so long. my mom was getting a bit pale and could only utter: "uhm - it wasn't like this with me". no kidding. somehow, we managed to get back to the delivery room and i went to the bathroom (pff pff) where i started wailing. no really, all i could do was go 'uuuuaaaeeeeiiii'. i don't know what i was thinking, but i went on like that for about two hours. two hours of utter, utter pain. without pause. pff pff, uuuaaaeeeiii.

maarten tried to coach my breathing again (pff pff) but i was getting really exhausted. after a while my mom tried to find brenda to ask if this was normal (pff pff). brenda only needs one look at me (pff pff) and immediately fetches bart (pff pff). bart then says he would break my water. water is broken. he says mikey's in distress and that there is poo in the water. and then all hell breaks loose inside me. the contractions got more intense and don't come in continuous waves, but it's
just one big peak. they monitor 'mikey's' heartbeat and it turned out it went down from about 140 beats per minute to 80 - sometimes 50. and you can actually hear that. it constantly went from "dududududdud" to "dud.... dud.... dud...." scary as hell.

things weren't fantastic, to say the least. they wanted to put a probe in mikey's head and monitor his heartbeat better and they wanted to get some blood off of his head every hour or so, to monitor his saturation. i could help mikey get more oxygen by adjusting my own breathing technique. yeah. seriously, i'm going uuuaaaeeeiii and i'm not really able to breathe normally, mister. but my new best friend bart tells me it would be better if i got an epidural, so that i could concentrate on my breathing and therefore mikey's oxygen. do they get my consent? hell yeah! put 5 epidurals in there!
first, an intern has to put in a line so that i will get enough fluids. she tries to do this between contractions, but since there is no real pause, she's getting really nervous and fails to do so three times. i'm REALLY eager to get the epidural now, so i think i wasn't that kind to her anymore. luckily, bart comes in again and puts in the line in one smooth move.

so maarten and the intern, noortje, and i (me in my bed) will go down to the second floor (we're on the fifth) to anesthesiology (sp?). we get into the elevator, noortje presses the button, we go down to the fourth floor - and the elevator stops. doesn't move. stuck. then, it goes up again to the fifth. noortje presses the button again. we go down to four. and up again to five. hilarious, no? TRY DOING THAT WHEN HAVING THREE CONTRACTIONS ALMOST AT THE SAME TIME. pff pff pff. so my very intelligent husband suggests that we move to another elevator. once in the second elevator, a woman enters. she starts telling me how to deal with the labor storm (or whatever the heck it is in english). "relax", is a verb that's quite funny at this moment. the only thing i want to say to her is "who are you and why do you feel the need to interfere?". but i uttered that question in a less polite manner. turns out she was a gynaecologist. ahem. well, whatever - she wasn't wearing a white coat so how the hell should i know.

finally, we get to the second floor where noortje gets reprimanded because she didn't bring a heart monitor for the baby. and that's not according to procedure. but they do have a heart monitor there. SO, PEOPLE. I'M IN EXCEPTIONAL PAIN. get that epidural in there and THEN worry about logistics. but noortje can't find mikey's heartbeat anymore. she's pressing on my belly as hard as she can (and as hard as i let her), but she just can't find it. noortje is getting pale. maarten is getting pale. noortje calls upstairs to bart. all i think is: no worries, he's alive. don't ask me how and why, but i just know. god is telling me he's doing okay. not well, but well enough. so while still squirming on my bed from the pain, i start telling people what to do (and maarten told me i wasn't doing it in a nice manner - do i care? not really). i take the probe from noortje and guide it to the heartbeat. then i tell the anesthesiologist to get that needle in my back. she says she wants to wait until i'm in between contractions. THERE IS NO IN BETWEEN. ARE Y'ALL DENSE???? so i say in the most calm manner that she should just go ahead and that i will be perfectly still.

people told me that there would be a power within me that i never knew existed. and there it was. while the contractions were rolling over, under, in me, i sat perfectly still. the doctor asked me once again if she could go ahead and i said: "just do it". and she did. 15 minutes later i was in heaven. sheer HEAVEN. i could still feel the contractions, but lordy lord this was bareable.

so we went up to the fifth again (with the right elevator) and bart feels how far i'm dillated. 3 cm's. are you freaking kidding me??? all this and just 3 lousy cm's? at least they can reach mikey's head and put him on machines. brenda coaches my breathing so that mikey gets more oxygen. and it works! i'm now able to get my baby's heartrate up again when he's in need. not that he's doing fantastic, but at least he's doing well enough to avoid an emergency cesarian. especially since they put me on some stuff that decreases the contractions (contraction blockers??? my english, eh). there are no more labor storms so in between contractions i'm breathing so that the oxygen is reaching him better.

they keep getting blood off his head and he's still doing well enough. after what i think was an hour or two, i'm thinking: "hm, i need to go to the bathroom. and not to pee". so i ask bart if there's a chance they can unhook mikey from the machines so i can go. bart is smiling and tells the nurses to stop the epidural, because i'm having "push contractions" and i need to feel them better. oh, i just thought i needed to 'back one out' but okay. i can't push just yet because i'm not at 10 cm's, but puffing away these contractions is a joke compared to what i just went through. they all step outside again to look evaluate mikey's condition again and i'm alone. and this time, i'm not talking to god anymore. i'm talking to my dad.

all i can think is: "you make sure he gets out in one piece and that he's going to be fine. i don't care how you do it from up there, but you better take care of it. you owe your grandchild that much".

i'm STILL on the contraction blocker drip, but let the pushing begin! i'm litterally pushing my guts out. yeah - i really did need to go the bathroom after all, but everybody acted as though that was the most common thing in the world. told you i'd be graphic. but after taking care of that, i figured that was the most embarassing thing that i would ever experience again and i pushed and pushed and pushed. and was annoyed by noortje standing next to me, yelling "go on go on go on!!!" repeatedly in my ear. poor noortje. such a sweetheart. but she couldn't do anything right anymore in my eyes. i'm pushing so hard my blood is gushing out the line with fluids.

after the first round, they take another blood sample off mikey's head and it's just bad news all over. they get in another gynaecologist (chief of staff or whatever) and i'm thinking - dad, you PROMISED! (he didn't actually, i mean - he wasn't talking back to me. i'm not that crazy. but in my heart, he made this promise). they had put l@lc on repeat and #41 comes on. i'm not making it up. i start singing and i know it'll be okay.

they can now do two things: race me to the o.r. and do an emergency cesarian, or get the vacuum pump and do it 'naturally'. since i'm pushing so hard, they opt for 'natural' birth. so second round, they make a cut in my vagina to get the pump in there, i'm pushing like crazy and together with the vacuum pump, with bart pulling it like there's a million dollars on the other end, mikey swiftly moves through the birth canal and then BANG, he stops and the pump flies through the room. turns out mikey's head is turned and got stuck behind that bone that women have. MY ENGLISH. so they put on the pump on mikey's head again, now the other doctor (diederik) is pulling the pump and i push and push and push and push and push and push and push for a couple of more rounds and nothing.

at this point, the world is fading. i'm in my own private little part of the universe and i think i could just fall asleep and it would all be over. i faintly hear a nurse say 'don't fall asleep', but i don't care anymore. y'all go away and leave me alone. i turn to maarten and say: "i've had it, i'm done, i'm going home". no really, i was actually really going to do that. everyone is yelling: "no, you can do it! you can do it!". and i'm thinking "whatever, talk to the hand". but then, from far, far way, dr. diederik is yelling "GODDAMMIT YOU ARE GOING TO PUSH AND YOU ARE GOING TO PUSH NOW!!!". and this actually helps. like a robot, i grab my legs and start pushing. and then, THEN he rams a forceps up my womanhood and i think I'M GOING TO DIE AND IF I DO, IT WOULD BE MOST WELCOME and i'm pulling on maarten's shirt and pull him over the bed and he starts crying and i'm thinking LET ME DIE and then, then they put something warm and wet on my belly and i hear this shrill but voluminous cry and maarten cries out: "it's a boy!".

and that's how mikey became yannick koert.

is anyone still there? hello? did y'all turn away in disgust?

anyhoo... they clean yannick as best as they can (they don't want to touch his head too much because, well, it should be obvious why) and i touch him with the utmost care and think "i know you!". bart is doing the stitches, maarten steps outside to smoke a cigarette and i'm on an ENDORFINE trip, people! holy hell, i feel good. all i can do is look at little yannick and talk to bart (we are heaving a discussion about jeff healey and dmb - he knows dmb! i love bart) and joke a bit. after he's done, i solemnly swear that no doctor will ever touch my vagina ever again. they put yannick in my arms, he searches and instantly finds my boob and starts drinking. all i think is: "this kid is covered in pooh, water and blood, he has two giant bumps on his head and a huge scar across his face, but this is by far the most beautiful thing i ever saw in my life".

because i had lost so much blood i couldn't sit or let alone walk and i had to stay in the hospital for two more days. luckily, we all went home together after that and yannick did better every day. and that's the delivery story. y'all can start reading again.
